Journal of my roles and responsibilities in the production of the music video

At the very start of this rotation we were organised into 3 groups, my group consisted of Fraser, David, Andrew and myself, I was happy with my group and I expected that we would work well together. As a class, we watched some of the more creative music videos that have been produced and took notes; an example of one of these videos is Ok Go’s This Too Shall Pass. Watching these videos made clear to us that even totally abstract ideas, with little relevance to a song, can work very effectively.
The next thing we did once the clients had been organised, was to prepare for our proposals. Our proposals took of the form of power point presentations and these were to deliver our ideas to the client in a clear and professional format. A few days later it was arranged for two artists to come in view and our proposals. The artists were to take notes one each proposal and choose a group to work with. Unfortunately, only one of the clients turned up on the day. However, this meant that we could do more preparation. The proposal went well for us; we prepared a PowerPoint presentation and delivered our ideas clearly to the client. After a few days we were told that the client had not chosen our group.

Over the next few days, we were told that there was two new clients who wished to work with us. As there was not time to propose directly to the new clients, we simply listened to the tracks and chose which are group preferred. After listening to both of the tracks, we chose Kitty Norman’s Farmyard. It was then that we started brainstorming ideas for the video. We received an email from Kitty that told us about some of the ideas that she had for the video and the possible locations that we could use. Taking her suggestions into account I made a PowerPoint presentation containing our ideas and possible concepts for the video. I will print a copy of the presentation and give it in with this assignment. We sent Kitty and email with the presentation attached. She swiftly got back to us, saying that she very much liked our ideas and looked forward to working with us. The general concept that we developed was strongly influenced by a feeling of nostalgia, this was to be mixed with a performance on a forested location in the edit.

The only time that Kitty was available to film on the Saturday, so we all met outside of the college bright and early to commence filming. We arrived at Kitty’s house that morning, we introduced are selves and planned the days events. The first thing we did was head down to the beach to film the opening sequence. I was appointed director for the day. We filmed right up until the afternoon, everything was going well. We then went back to Kitty’s house for lunch. We then headed back to the beach to capture some more footage, where we took advantage of an old pier and a grounded rowing boat. The rest of the day ran smoothly and we captured some good footage.

The next thing for us to do was the edit. It took us a fair amount of time to get all of the footage on to the computer because the Macs were playing up. Also, some of the footage was damaged for an unknown reason, but we made progress with the footage we had. We were forced to construct a new narrative in our final edit, which altered slightly from our original idea. This was because we lost some important footage. But we managed to produce a successful music video. Once the edit was complete we emailed it to Kitty. She was very pleased with the outcome. Over all i am pleased with our product. If i were to produce a music video with an external client again, i would make sure that we packed extra batteries.
